Biography

Dr. Wooding was born in Chatham, Ontario and was educated initially in London, where he received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 1965. This was immediately followed by an M.A. in Psychology from the University of Waterloo in 1968. After receiving a Diploma in Education from the University of Western Ontario, in 1972, Dr. Wooding’s interests in the physiological aspects of Psychology led him to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in Genetics at the University of Guelph in 1973. After several years in the working world, he returned to school, completing a Doctorate in Education in Educational Psychology in 1986 at Brigham Young University in Utah.

Over his 30+-year career in Education, Dr. Wooding has held a variety of positions. He has been a school psychologist, counsellor, administrator and classroom teacher. He has worked for three Boards of Education, in two provinces and in 5 different schools. He has also taught extension courses at Georgian College and at the University of Western Ontario. Since 1984 he has also maintained a private practice in Psychology, specializing in parenting problems and stress management.

In 1995, Dr. Wooding published “Parenting Today’s Teenager Effectively: Hear Me, Hug Me, Trust Me”. This book quickly reached the best-seller level in Canada and has established him as one of the country’s leading authorities on parenting teenagers. As a result, most major Canadian newspapers as well as some in the U.S have interviewed him. He has appeared on dozens of talk shows all across Canada and the northern U.S. and has been interviewed by numerous metropolitan TV stations. His second book “Rage, Rebellion & Rudeness: Parenting Teenagers in the New Millennium” was released in June, 2003. In the Spring of 2005, Dr. Wooding released his powerful third book, “The Parenting Crisis”, which is guaranteed to stimulate considerable discussion among parents. Recently, in October 2008, his latest book “Step Parenting and the Blended Family” was released.

For many years Dr Wooding appeared weekly on Calgary’s Global TV station as a commentator on teenage issues, and still is called frequently for comment when teenage issues arise. He is also a frequent public speaker at teachers’ conventions and parenting conferences throughout Canada.

In addition to his activities in Psychology and Education, Dr. Wooding recently retired from the Canadian Army Reserve where he was a specialist in communication technology, rising to the command of 746 Communication Squadron in Calgary.

Dr. Wooding has been married to Elizabeth for over 30 years and has two grown children, Kjell, a computer engineer and Liv, a teacher.
